Social Networking: Yes, No, Maybe So?

Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?

This first article focuses on the negative effects of social networking.  It questions if our habits of constantly checking for notifications, messages, likes, followers, and friend requests are driving us away from each other rather than interacting face to face.  We are used to being connected to everything and everyone at all times.  The article uses a death as an example; in old age a woman who had no family or friends left, turned to social networks to see fans or those she cared about.  The description of her death was very lonely and sad.  The focus is to ask if it is truly best for us to sit in front of a screen and waste our lives away.

Social media is reinventing how business is done

This article is focusing on how social networking can be positive.  Business owners use social media to access costumer’s thoughts about service.  With social network it can be immediate gratification in terms of reading posts reviews.  Owners also say they can make a more proficient team they work with since social media allows others to see your attitude and personal life; these way employers can make sound judgments.

Honestly, I can see both sides.  I know social networks have made us more unaware of the world, which is extremely ironic due to convenience.  However, it is useful when news needs to spread fast or make a business better.  I think if the world could find a happy medium then it would be okay.  But I see social networks as nothing more than a side game that makes us anxious and unfocused. I get on Facebook and Youtube everyday to pass time, I don't really read, I scroll to avoid what I should be doing. It has gotten me in trouble sometimes...you need to learn how to balance work and social media.

  1. I honestly think that social media will be the death of face to face conversation, I do not like what social media does to people in groups. If you go out to a restaurant you will see people all over their phones but barely talking to each other so why even go out and hang out if you're just going to be on your phone the whole time?

  2. I understand. It makes me mad to see people mindlessly scrolling through their phones when life is happening right then. The phones need to be put down, shut down, tucked away. With accessibility to the web all the time, no one seems to appreciate simple things like sunrises or a nice breeze.
